JMS HORSESHOEING
Meet Josh Sanders, APF-1
Joshua Sanders has been a professional farrier for over 10 years. He is based out of Pennsylvania and Florida and travels throughout the US to cater to his clients and their show schedules. Joshua has always enjoyed working with performance horses and has fostered a desire to encourage horses to perform at the highest level they are able. Joshua also has a strong passion for helping the lame horse recover and get back into the ring. This passion for helping the lame horse often requires a team effort, and Joshua is happy to consult with the veterinarian on these and all cases.
Adding to his 10 plus years of experience, Joshua is a sought-after lecturer and clinician and has been honored to speak at the International Hoof-Care Summit several times, which is the largest gathering of vets in farriers in the world that focuses on hoof care. In addition, he was awarded the 2018 International Association of Professional Farriers Future Leaders Award. Joshua serves as a current board member of Equine Soundness Professionals which is an organization made up of farriers and veterinarians that focus on lameness.

Since starting JMS Horseshoeing over 10 years ago, Joshua has been providing quality farrier care to the western Pennsylvania area. Joshua knows that every horse is an individual and should be shod according to their conformation, workload, environment, and to enhance movement when performing. This is why Joshua strives to be multidimensional in his farrier practice by using many different methods to achieve optimal performance for each horse. Joshua has experience using many techniques from glue on shoes, to welding, to different pad applications. Joshua advocates for clear communication between the care team members so that he can be informed on how the horse is performing so adjustments can be made to ensure a strong performance in the ring. Joshua is an advocate for farrier education and has an understanding of biomechanics of the limb and proper movement for the disciplines of the horses under his care. Having this ability to understand the needs of each individual horse, Joshua has developed an eye for watching horses perform and often may ask to see the horse move before shoeing in order to ensure the best care for the equine. Joshua is an advocate for a team approach when shoeing performance and lame horses. This is why Joshua tries to work with veterinarians, trainers/riders, and other equine professionals that are of the same mindset. This mindset is essential for a successful outcome for the horses under Joshua’s care.

At JMS Horseshoeing we believe that the horse is, and should be, the ultimate priority. Every horse deserves the best whether they are a high level performance horse or a horse with lameness issues; they still deserve the best care. Joshua believes that whatever application that is applied to the horse should be in the best interest of the horse. The horse should be the ultimate concern when providing hoof care. This sets Joshua apart from others because his love of horses and his character motivates him to serve the horse and its needs first. Joshua is an advocate for the horse; just because a horse is sound it doesn’t mean it is performing at its best. This mentality causes Joshua to constantly strive to improve the horse’s movement and feet to ensure the highest standard and quality of foot care. When dealing with performance horses it is inevitable for lameness to occur in some horses which is why Joshua has done an extensive amount of education dealing with lameness. Joshua’s approach when dealing with lameness cases is to try to get the horse back into the ring and back to full work in an efficient and positive way. Joshua likes to call himself a modern traditionalist, meaning that he blends the skills of a traditional farrier with the ability to apply modern techniques, such as glue on shoes. This blend of two modalities enables Joshua to come up with a creative solution for the situation, whether the horse be lame or underperforming, in a way that fits the horses’ needs. Joshua also has a creative mind which makes him a very multidimensional farrier that has created an atmosphere of success in his business and with his customers.
